Turnigy Lipo Balancer Question ???

Postby Tracon » Tue Mar 09, 2010 6:17 am

Hi Guys,

I just bought 4 Turnigy 5s 5000 from Hobby King for $55 USD each!!!

I can't believe the awesome price compared to Thunder Power.

My question is what balancer will work with these Lipos???

I know a few of you are using them down in Burnaby and any info would be great.

Does the "Blinky Balancer" work with these???

Thanks in advance,

Sam

I am using Astro Blinky on my HC/HK packs. Since they sell so many different packs, I am not certain that they follow the same convention for alll of them.
If you have a basic multimeter with probes, it should be a very simple task to check for compatibility with Astro Blinky.
If you have not charge your packs the voltage between the black and green should be ~ 3.85V, black and yellow should have a reading of ~7.70V, black and white ~11.55. If you charged the packs the same readings should be multiples of 4.2V (4.2, 8.4, 12.6...). Be very careful not to make any short circuit!!!! That woud most likely destroy or seriously damage the pack.
Good luck!

Thanks guys, I was more asking if the connectors are compatible or fit ???

I ran into Soren at Norburn today and he said to be careful with the blinky because it has damaged or done bad things to Lipo packs...

Anyone else had any problem with them and Turnigy packs ???

Bring a multimeter with you to the field.
Charge your battery with a Blinky.
Test the cells after.
You'll never use it again.
A blinky has to be left on the battery at least 15 minutes after the full charge....

The Astro "Blinky" balancer is great for small batteries < 3000 mAh but it does not draw enough to balance larger batteries with any particular speed. The problem is if you are balancing while charging and the cells go way out of balance it may not be able to keep up. The other issue is that it is not able to tell the charger to stop if a cell goes bad. I recommend a charger with built in balancers such as the models from Hyperion and Turnigy. The Turnigy chargers are very inexpensive but seem to work great.
